Before and after with this old house.

Its demo time! (August 4th, 2010)
This was the living room (where I'm taking the picture) we tore down the wall, which was located where the 2x4 is standing, separating the living room from the dinning room (where Zane is standing). There were layers of flooring, it was a VERY long process. Layer 1: carpeting; Layer 2: vinyl "wood-like" flooring, its actually linoleum with a wood print, you see it here; Layer 3:tar paper, you can see this pulled up in the right-hand corner of the room; Layer 4: 3/4 inch plywood (Zane is standing on that section we pulled up), and lastly, Layer 5: old led paint covered wide plank wood floors.

Here is a shot standing in the doorway from the kitchen looking into the old dinning room. You can see the kerosene heater, that was removed and sold during this process. This picture also gives you a good perspective of how high the ceiling is, about 7 feet. The ceiling came to the top of the moulding around the doorways.

View from bathroom door, here you can better see where the wall was between the two rooms.

We made a hole in the ceiling, to see what was up there.

Zane, saying, "Hey hunny, come over here and look up there, what do you think?"

It looked good, so we decided to tear the ceiling down before we went further with the floors.

Progress.

Fast forward through some very long sweaty days and nights pulling up the layers of flooring and the ceiling and removing the electric in the ceiling and we've got this and a circular sander from Lowes.  Before the sanding was to begin each and every single nail had to be sunk deeper into the wood as we didn't want it to snag the machine and we knew a few layers needed to come up.

The other end of the room looking towards the front of the house.

Long story short: after 3 Lowes circular sanders we came to the conclusion that it was not heavy duty enough for this job. We brought in the big guns and rented a drum sander from Shaker Rental. They were great and so was the sander. You can see the dust flying in this picture and the next. We had to rent a hand sander for the edges of the room and the ceiling.

We used 20 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit, and 100 grit. Each grit was used on the floor 1, 2, 3, 3, times respectively. This took a VERY long time, and we worked several nights till 2 AM. We were kind of up against a deadline, this was August and Zane started back to work on the 15th.

I found this amazing color afternoon tea, it was late and I was feeling silly, and we were getting married in 2 months, and I really do just love him to pieces!

Ah, here is an angle you haven't seen. This is looking at the STEEP stairs and the office on the other side of the living room.

BEAUTIFUL!! Such a drastic difference.

Now everything needed to be vacuumed, wiped down with a wet cloth etc.

Then a month of polyurethane, three coats on the floor two on the ceiling. After each coat and a week to 10 days to dry, because August is humid, we had to rub it down with steel wool, then use tacky cloth to pull up the dust.

The finished product.

Lovely, shiny floors.

Our wonderful Country wood stove.

The stairs! (The living room looks completely different now arranging furniture and decoration wise as well as more renovations. These finished product pictures were taken the day before the wedding! )

Warm feet, warm heart, warm soul

There are days where I love our Country wood stove. It heats our house, saves us a heating bill, gives wonderful warmth and a cozy romantic fire. Tonight, I love our wood stove, its warming the house after a nice airing out. The little Roo and I went for a walk to see horses on this beautiful, oddly warm, winter day and while we did that we let the house breathe. Now the coals are glowing and I'm reflective about starting this blog, my life, my family, my baby, and the plans God has for me and us, as 5 months ago, He changed my plans and opened my eyes to His different plan for me and He continues to change His plan for us, and we are listening and following. Tonight, good night, sleep tight.
